Life Springs from the Earth

Easter, and life springs from the earth
in sun-drenched splendor;
laughing daffs and shy dainty violets
nodding a good day,
the miracle of resurrection manifest.

Across the world where Easter ends
the ground is thick with blood.
What is this dark madness that drives hate?
Where will be the spring of hope's renewing?
Do the birds sing as sweetly there,
filling the air with the gladness of day?

God speed my prayer for peace
on wings of love.

Cast off winter's gloom;
I have done this day with grieving.
Embrace the morning
and the sweet warm smell of life
and join in singing: alleluia.
